The spiral shape chambered ‘shell’ is the buoyancy chamber of the Spirula Spirula, also known as the Ram’s Horn Squid. This squid can be found in tropical and sub tropical regions especially around the Canary Islands. Due to the buoyancy of this ‘shell’, they can be carried long distances along ocean currents and many can be found washed ashore along NZ coastlines.
